GENE PAOLO GARCIA

Im a cultural anthropologist working across development, environment, and food systems. My work connects research and practice to understand livelihoods, landscapes, and institutions across Asia and the Pacific.

Research and Practices Areas

My work examines how livelihoods, environments, and economies are shaped through everyday labor and institutions—particularly in Indigenous, agrarian, and community contexts across Asia and the Pacific.

I move between academic research and applied engagement, working across development, sustainability, and policy processes while remaining grounded in long-term fieldwork.

Current Research & Practice

Current MPhil Research

Research & Institutional Engagement

My MPhil research in cultural anthropology at Hiroshima University focuses on Indigenous coffee-growing communities in the Cordillera region of the Philippines.

  • Examines how global markets and sustainability frameworks reshape ecological spaces, labor relations, and knowledge systems.

  • Explores multispecies relations and agrarian livelihoods through long-term ethnographic fieldwork.

  • Engages participant observation, in-depth interviews, and collaborative research methods

This work builds from long-term engagement with farmer communities, including my work through Alluyon Coffee, a social enterprise I founded prior to my MPhil, as a site where theory, livelihood, and practice intersect.

Working Across Sectors

My work spans diverse sectors, driven by the belief that social and ecological challenges require a synthesis of research, policy, and practice. I bridge these fields to create holistic solutions for complex global issues.
